Fireplaceproducts at Esse Dealer Day

Esse Showroom & Factory Tour

By Reece Toscani - Fireplaceproducts.co.uk

Monday 17th March 2014. Esse Engineering held an open day for their dealers, and I was invited up to have a look around. I had not been to Esse before and was keen to see how these quality British built stoves were made, from concept through to manufacture. After an almost five hour drive from Essex up to Barnoldswick, Lancashire I finally arrived at the Esse Factory.
Esse Factory

Esse Color RangeAfter a quick meet and greet with the team at Esse we headed into the showroom to take a look at their new Esse 990CHQ Multifuel Central Heating Cooker. This new version of the 990CH has a quench coil fitted inside the boiler meaning that this cooker can now be fitted into a pressurised system, opening up a lot more installation opportunities to new customer base.

Next we had a tour around the rest of  the cooker showroom looking at all of the  other models in the collection. Whilst we  have sold Esse cookers for over 10years I  haven’t had the opportunity to see them  all next to each other before so it makes it  a lot easier to compare the models.  Another great thing about Esse Cookers is  that in 2011 they expanded their enamel range to include 20 different colors , and it was great to be able to see some of the more unusual colors, such as salmon, fern green and saffron.

Esse Hotplate

We also had the opportunity to look at a prototype Ironheart Cooker with some new hotplate options built into the cast ‘dogbone’ hotplate, along with the option to add a BBQ Grill into the firebox. So I very much look forward to those options becoming available later on this year.
Before heading off to the Factory we had a quick chat with Esse’s Steve who was using both the Esse EC4i Electric Induction Cooker and EL13amp Electric Cooker (that can be fitted on a standard 13amp plug) to cook us some lunch. He showed us the induction hob on the EC4i Cooker and demonstrated it by placing a pan of water over one half of the central zone. Then using the touch panel on the cooker set the temperature and before long you could see a crescent of bubbles forming where the heat was being applied to only the half of the water that was sitting on the zone. He then proceeded to place his hand on the other size of the zone that was on, something you most certainly not be able to do on a ceramic hob. Here is another example of the induction hob only heating the pan and not the entire surface area.

We headed into the factory to see where all Esse stoves are made. We walked past the sales office which is located inside the factory for ease of communication between the sales team and the factory floor. Next up was the testing area, where every single gas stove/cooker, oil cooker, and boiler cooker is tested prior to be being packed and despatched out to customers. We then headed off through the factory seeing the cookers being built at various stages, it was great to get a glimpse to see what is actually inside each cooker and how they work. We then proceeded through the enamelling plant room, where all of the components are glazed and then fired in two huge kiln style ovens. After this we saw an Ironheart Deluxe being assembled on the production line which was interesting to see all of the parts separately laid out and then the finished product. We then made our way through the stove production line, past the machine that cuts all the sheet steel and the welding bays where a team of welders were busy building the stoves of the day, which from what I could see were Esse 125 Multifuel Stoves. Lastly we stopped at the Research & Development department to take a look at what the future has in store for Esse Stoves… There are lots of new products in the pipeline, but unfortunately I am unable to say anything more than that, under punishment of death from their national sales director, who was not best pleased with me taking photos every 2minutes. What I will say though is that I am very excited about “One” of their new products, which I think will be a welcome addition to an already sterling line up of products.

As if by magic, we arrived back in the showroom just as lunch was served. Now I am not sure what I was expecting, maybe a couple of sandwiches and a sausage roll, but instead was presented with a banquet fit for a king. Steve had surpassed himself with an outstanding effort. There was tempura king prawns, pork belly with crackling, roast beef and pepper sandwiches, all of which was cooked on the two Esse cookers that morning. I have probably done Steve a huge injustice in my descriptions but here is a photo and I think that speaks for itself:

Lunch at Esse dealer tour dayAfter possibly the best lunch I have had in a very long time and several return trips to the buffet later we headed upstairs into the Esse Stove Museum. Esse stoves have been made since 1854 and so this year they are celebrating 160years of Esse stoves. The Stove museum features more than 30 models including one of James Smiths very first Esse Stoves dating back to circa 1860. Since then Esse stoves have been at the forefront of design and innovation including the Esse Pioneer Stove which featured a moveable plate in the top of the stove that once the fire was up to temperature could be slide over the flue making the smoke move over a baffle plate providing an area where smoke gasses could be re-burnt above the firebox. Something that many modern stove manufactures claim to be the originator of this idea, but the Pioneer puts them in their place as this was around in circa 1910!

Esse Musem

Esse were also well known for their collection of inset stoves, many of which were inspired by the art deco movement and featured a wide selection of enamel colours. Being in the museum you can also see the evolution of the use of glass in stoves, something that we take for granted now-a-days. From the original Mica paper style glass, on to the thin slips of glass moving up to eventually a full window pane.  Also on show in the museum are letters from some of Esse’s more unique client list, of which include Florence Nightingale who was so passionate about Esse cookers that in a letter that she wrote to Esse explained that she would only use Esse cookers in her hospital in Balaclava. Famous British explorers, Shackleton and Scott also relied on Esse to provide hot food and warmth on their many expeditions to some of the world’s coldest and most inhospitable places. A tradition followed on by British climber Alan Hinkes who used a specially adapted Esse Solo stove to for heating and to melt snow into drinking water at his base camp in the Himalayan Mountains.

Esse Cookers are custom to being on the grand stage and they made their acting debut alongside Roger Moore in the 1985 James Bond Film; View to a Kill. More recently Esse were approached by ITV to make a new stove that could be used on a TV show that they were making called 71 Degrees North, where by a team of celebrities went to the artic and used the specially designed Campesse Stove and flue system for their heating and cooking. You may also be familiar with the TV program River Cottage which features an Esse Ironheart & CAT Gas Esse Cooker. The Ironheart cooker was a new product developed in 2004 to celebrate 150years of Esse, and is still going strong today.

Last on the tour was the Esse Firestone outdoor oven. This robust and impressively large oven was tried tested and trusted by top chefs at six different restaurants around the country including two Michelin-starred establishments. The British made Esse Firestone is a completely new way to bring together cooking and dining al fresco turning any meal into an occasion. Some of the great design features of this outdoor wood fired oven is that it can be rotated through 360° meaning that if the wind is blowing in the wrong direction and preventing you from lighting it, you can simply turn the oven around. The exterior shell is highly insulated and winter-proof thought we would suggest a cover when it is not in use to help prolong the life-span. The oven is capable of hitting temperatures in excess of 550°C meaning that you can cook a pizza on the oven base in less than 2minutes! Included is a pizza peel, apron and a pair of oven gloves. There are also optional side preparation table’s available if required. In summary I had a great day out at the Esse Factory & Showroom meeting the team and learning more about their new and old products. A big thank you to everyone at Esse for their hospitality, and especially Steve for those prawns!

Green Deal or No Deal? - House of Commons Visit

Green Deal or No Deal? - House of Commons Visit
By Reece Toscani - Fireplaceproducts.co.uk

Wednesday 26th February 2014. Today my colleague Arta and I are heading to the Houses of Commons in Westminster, London to attend the annual Green Deal or No Deal Meeting. This event is a great opportunity to meet with other likeminded companies working within the renewable heating sector.

view from green deal or no deal event

It was a beautiful day in London, which made a change compared to the miserable weather we had been having recently. The event was being hosted in the Terrace Pavilion out the back of the Houses of Parliament which sits right alongside the River Thames, offering a lovely view of the river and the London Eye, and view not often available to the public.

After about an hour or so of networking and speaking with a few dozen people there was a presentation from nine companies all of whom are involved within the supply chain of the Green Deal, from the assessor to the provider, to the installer, to the supplier.

For those of you who are not familiar with the Green Deal, it is a government incentive that helps you make energy saving improvements to your home and find the best way to pay for them. The improvements that could save you the most energy depend on your home, but typically could include, Insulation, heating, draught-proofing, double glazing, renewable energy generation. The green deal is available to anyone that has an electricity meter (including prepayment meters) in England, Scotland or Wales.

Green Deal Step 1 – Get an Assessment
You must get an assessment of your property to use the Green Deal. You will need to contact either a local Green Deal Assessor, or ask a Green Deal Provider to find an assessor for you. Please Note that you will have to pay for an assessment, and the assessor should inform you of the cost upfront, as a guide this is around £70 - £90

What do you get for your money? Well firstly a green deal assessor will visit your home and talk to you about your property and your energy use and help you decide if you could benefit from Green Deal Improvements. You will be asked, if you own or rent the property, if it is a listed building, in a conservation area, built prior to 1900 or constructed in a non-traditional way. If there are access issues and to provide copies of your recent energy bills. You may also be asked how many people live in the home, the type of heating and appliances you use, how often you use your heating, what energy saving measures have already been installed.
After the visit you will receive a green deal advice report this will contain:
An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) that rates your home for energy efficiency,
An occupancy assessment that measures how much energy your home is using,
Suggested improvements from the assessor,
Estimated monetary savings you could make on your annual bills,
Whether the improvements will pay for themselves through reduced energy costs,
This advice report will remain valid for 10 years, or until you make changes or energy saving improvements to the property.

Green Deal Step 2 – Getting the work done
So you have decided that you wish to proceed and get some or all of the work done.
You can at this point ask a green deal provider to arrange installation and pay for the work yourself,
Ask a green deal provider to arrange installation and a green deal finance plan to pay for the work,
Get your own installers and pay for the work yourself,
If you choose either of the first two options then you should give your green deal provider a copy of your advice report they will then quote you on the work that needs to be done and arrange installation for you. If you choose to get a green deal finance plan then this quote will include the repayment terms. Remember providers are independent companies and you can shop around and get prices from more than one provider. You may also wish to ask your installer if you can combine this work with any other schemes that are currently running, such as Energy Company Obligation (ECO) Feed-In-Tariffs & Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).
Note you can only get a finance plan for improvements outlined in your green deal advice report.

Green Deal Step 3 – How to Pay?
There are two ways to pay, either in advance or with a green deal finance plan.
If you choose the finance option then once the work has been carried out the repayments will be automatically added to your electric bill. This will either be taken via a small amount every day if you are on a pre-paid meter, or on your monthly bill. This is because the Green Deal stays with the property. If you decide to move after taking the work out you will no longer benefit from the improvements that you have made and therefore you will no longer be required to pay for them.
It is possible to pay your green deal off early, but you might be charged a fee for doing so, check with your provider.

It was a very informative presentation and cleared up a few of the grey areas surrounding how each company work with each other. After this there was another opportunity to network.  From our perspective it was very useful to speak to other companies involved in this process and hear about their experiences, so we can work out exactly where we fit in this process..

I also bumped into our previous Stovax & Gazco rep Alan Parker who was there with his new company Talk Green. It was good to catch up with Alan as I hadn’t seen him for some time and so was good to hear about how his new business was going and his experiences of Green Deal coming from a similar background of the fireplace and stove industry as we do.

As one of the sponsors of the event we had our name and advert on the bag that everyone who attended the event received. It was a particularly nice moment, seeing our company name on the side of a bag making its way through the city being seen by hundreds more people as everyone left. It was also funny to see how many of those people and bags made their way to the pub just outside the Houses of Parliament, where the conversations continued long into the night.

Something else that we are very excited to be involved with this year is the National Green Deal & ECO Rising Stars Gala Awards that is happening on the 29th May. We are sponsoring one of the award categories and below you will see myself and Arta with Gary who organised both the event today and the awards gala.

All in all it was a very productive day, we made some good contacts with other companies and came away reassured about the prospects of the Green Deal and what it has to offer home owners. If you would like more information on the Green Deal, please visit

Piazzetta Visit - Asolo, Italy

Piazzetta Visit - Asolo, Italy

By Reece Toscani - Fireplaceproducts.co.uk

Tuesday 18th February 2014

I am heading off to with some of the team from Robeys and 20 other dealers to visit the Piazzetta Stove Factory in Asolo, Italy. Due to some poor train planning on my part I arrived at the airport with plenty of time to spare, 4hours to be exact. So hit the duty free to buy a pair of sunglasses in anticipation of glorious Italian weather! And posted an update on twitter.

To my surprise I received a response from @manairport almost straight away requesting an airport selfy to which I foolishly reciprocated and was laughed at by other passengers. Shortly after I met up with Mark & Sharon Robey, Mark Pallet & Martyn Buckley from Robeys and the rest of the dealers that were coming along and we jetted off to Italy. On the plane found myself sitting next to Ben from BMF Limited (@bmfonline) based in Leeds, and Andy from StovesCo near St. Andrews in Scotland. Clearly keeping us young guns together and out of trouble from everyone else at the back of the plane.

We arrived in Asolo, Italy to a very nice hotel, aptly names "Hotel Asolo" of which the Robeys party pretty much took over the entire hotel. A quick change of clothes and a trip to the bar later and we went out into the main town.

Asolo is in the foothills of the Dolomite Mountains, a very picturesque town dating back to Roman times. Asolo has a charm that few others towns possess, starting with its glorious and unusual history. It has been home to many famous historical figures including English poet Robert Browning, actress Eleonora Duse and the explorer Freya Stark.

Walking around the town centre there were hundreds of people from all over Europe there specifically for the Piazzetta fire week. To say that Piazzetta had taken over the town for this event would be an understatement. The city museum entrance building had be turned into a hospitality suite with local food and drink being served throughout the night. We were then treated to a fire dancing and fire breathing performance by an international group who were there specifically to entertain us. Next we took a trip up to Queen Cornaro’s Castle to watch a local theatre performance. Featuring an amazing light show and fantastic use of UV lighting and shadows was a truly wonderful performance the likes of which I have never seen before. After this had a quick glass of mulled wine and headed back to the hotel to get some sleep ahead of the anticipated tour around the Piazzetta factory in the morning.

EcoBuild Exhibition at London ExCeL Centre

EcoBuild Exhibition – London ExCeL Centre
By Reece Toscani - Fireplaceproducts.co.uk

Tuesday 4th – Thursday 6th March 2014. I am heading off to the ExCeL Centre, London for the EcoBuild Exhibition today. After several months of careful planning and working alongside La Nordica Extraflame regarding the products that we should have out on display, the day has finally come.

So after a train, tube & short hop on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) I have arrived at the ExCeL Centre. Found our stand N1312/1313 right in front of entrance N5 and walked in to find the stand, and what a fine job the builders have done! I had seen the plans before the show so I knew where everything was going to be and how it would be laid out, but I was very impressed with the scale of the stand and how impressive it all looked. We had a good selection of Wood Burning Stoves, Wood Fired Cookers, Cassette & Built-In Stoves, Pellet Stoves, Boiler Stoves, Stoves with Ovens and Pellet Boilers.

I had a walk around the stand with Alessandro the UK export Manager for La Nordica, familiarising myself with all the products again, as it had been a little while since I had seen some of the models, and a few of the pellet stoves were brand new to me. So after a 20minute refresher course on the new models we were ready for the doors to open and the show to begin…

La Nordica Italy built in cooker
10 am sharp, the shutters were up and public were in. Being right at one of the entrances meant that people were walking straight towards our stand and immediately we started talking to people. We spoke to a great cross section of people including, builders, architects, interior designers, project managers and customers who were planning to put a new wood burning stove in, or change their heating system for a pellet fired boiler with an integrated wood burner. As always the wood burning cookers proved to be very popular, especially this model the Italy Built-In Wood Cooker. This modern looking wood fired cooker has convection sides built-in in allowing you to place kitchen units either side of the cooker without having to leave a large gap.

Central heating boiler products were very popular across all three days, with many people interested in removing existing LPG or Oil fired systems and looking for a renewable alternative. The Three Pellet Boiler Stoves that we had on the stand received a lot of interest from people. The principal behind running a system like this would be to have a pellet boiler and a thermal heat store (similar to a hot water tank) in a utility room or garage. This can then be linked up to a wood fired stove or built-in stove in a living room that has a boiler and so can also produce hot water. Both the wood fired stove and the pellet boiler create hot water which is stored in the thermal heat store tank. This stored hot water is then used to run radiators or underfloor heating systems throughout the house. You can also add a domestic hot water coil into the tank that will use the stored hot water in the tank to create hot water for your shower, bath or taps. This is a very simplistic overview of what is possible using wood or pellets for your central heating.

Solar energy was something else that was mentioned by visitors to the stand, and the good news is that if you go for a system as described above, it is also possible to integrate solar. This is done by adding another coil into your thermal heat store, the water running through the solar panels is heated by the sun and feed down pipes to that coil. The hot water inside this coil heats the larger volume of water stored in the tank and as a result generates more stored hot water. By adding a solar or wood burning stove into your system your pellet boiler will only come on when the water in the store drops below a certain temperature. Meaning that the pellet boiler will not have to fire as often, so it is cheaper to run as less pellets are being burnt and the hopper will not need to be topped up as often.

After two long hard days on the stand we were at the final day. By this point I still had not had much of a chance to walk around the show and look at what else was on offer, so I called in the cavalry and asked our very own Luke Argentieri to help out on the Thursday so that I could finally leave the stand and take a walk around. I knew that there were a couple of our other suppliers exhibiting so I went out to find the Firebelly, Morso, Eco Angus & Robeys stands and have a look at what they had on offer. I walked one block up to entrance N6 and found the Robeys & Firebelly stands next to each other. Robeys sell the Rais, Piazzetta & Harrie Leenders brands, of which they had one of my top 10 favourite stoves on display the Fuga EL in white, shown below at the front of their stand.

Directly opposite was Firebelly Stoves who had a good selection of their single sided and double sided stoves on offer, in a variety of colors, including a lovely Patriot Blue T1 Stove.
Then popped off and found the chaps at Eco Angus who supplied our log gasification unit that we have burning providing all of our heating for our showrooms in Rayleigh, Essex.

On my travels I also came across several other pellet stove manufactures exhibiting including; Thermo Rossi, Palazzetti, MCZ & Solzaima all of which had some really nice products on display. By this time it was already 3pm on the Thursday and the show finished at 4pm on the last day to give the stand builders a chance to take everything apart. So I quickly walked around the rest of the show to see what else was on offer, as there were a lot of other types of products being show cased outside of the heating industry.

Eventually I came across the Morso Stoves stand that was hiding in the south hall, and with time ticking away I headed back to the La Nordica stand. 4pm came and the PA system kicked in telling people to leave, this seemed to cause a flurry of last minute enquiries and I ended up talking to two or three people all at once who wanted more information on our products. 30 minutes later after the last visitor left the stand, the builders were able to start packing everything up. Prior to the start of the show we had bought a selection of the models that were on the stand. Some have already been sold during the run up to and even while the show was on. The rest were crated and sent back to us and we now have them available for sale from stock, see our Warehouse Clearance Sale Section for more details. All that was left to do was say my goodbyes to the guys from La Nordica for inviting us along, send a quick tweet on my way home and prepare myself to start getting back to all of the people that we spoke to over the three days.

Why should Ukraine Crisis make you think of wood stoves ?

Why should Ukraine Crisis make you think of wood stoves ?

by James Argentieri - Fireplaceproducts.co.uk

Here at fireplaceproducts.co.uk we are heavily involved in the UK heating industry so find this latest crisis very concerning.  With gas and oil supply in Denmark and the UK depleting we are only going to become more reliant on importing gas and oil from elsewhere. We are encouraging all our clients to consider how they plan to heat their homes and take proactive action.
There are plenty of options: Wood burning stoves, boilers stoves or new pellet stoves and boilers that can offer reduction of your current heating bills and safeguard future rises.
We know many of customers have been thinking along the same lines.  We have found there to be a massive increase of interest over the last few years in wood burners.  Unfortunately, this latest crisis in the Baltic region is hardly surprising and serves a reminder why we should look for more sustainable options.
If you haven’t got up to speed with the latest news here is a brief summary of the Ukraine crisis:

Ukraine independently governed since 1991 has history of natural gas disagreements with Russia, otherwise known as “gas wars”.
In 2006 and in 2009 Russia literally turned off the supply like a flick of a switch the supply was off in the midst of cold winters.  Russia complaining of delayed Ukraine payments and siphoning off gas meant for other European countries.
This has a European wide consequence and maybe more importantly for us a UK one.
Gazprom (the Russian company who is the largest extractor of natural gas in the world) shares have suffered with the news of increased Russian troop activity in the Baltic so this isn’t good for Russia either.
It is amazing that the suggestion of conflict can directly affect the price for our imported natural resources.  The Rac has issued a warning to motorists that this crisis could lead to 5p rise at the pumps.  If war breaks out then the price will no doubt rise further, during the Gulf war there was 10% increase on pump prices!

Worryingly Russia supplies 30% of European gas demand, 50% of which flow through Ukraine’s pipe network.  Although the situation this time around may not have such a strong short term effect as we have had a mild winter and the reserves in some European countries have been increased.  What if we were going into another cold winter only in 2012/2013 the UK had the coldest winter in 50 years!

Is the UK ready for this Ukraine crisis and what if it continues?

Well UK gas reserves capacity hasn't been increased in recent years, which is no doubt due to the recent austerity measures.  However, are we going to be debating this decision like the recent one about flood prevention measures or lack of!

Our view point is with depleting natural gas reserves leading to an over reliance on gas from less stable areas of the world take your destiny into your hands and buy a wood burning appliance whether it be a wood burner which simply heats your room; a wood cooker which can cook your dinner or get a wood burning boiler stove to do your central heating.  Another product category which is worth looking into in our minds at fireplaceproducts.co.uk is Pellet boilers they can bridge the gap between the conveniences of a gas appliance with automated hopper systems available.

We are actually at Excel for Eco build 2014 exhibiting on the La Nordica Stand between 4/03/2014 and 6/03/2014 so if you have any questions then come and see us.
